Bruce W. Buchanan
Fourth-Generation Owner & CEO
Bruce W. Buchanan, the fourth-generation owner of this family-held business, is CEO of Flanner Buchanan. He takes great pride in the family's six-generation history in Indiana and its nearly 150 years of funeral service in Indianapolis. Bruce joined the company's board in 1987 and spent his early years managing the expansion of new funeral centers with flexible event spaces for life celebrations and community events. He holds a BA in Political Science from Indiana University and an MS in Journalism from Ohio University, and attended Broad Ripple High School. He is active in civic and arts groups in Indianapolis, and he and his wife Julie live downtown.
Andrew Buchanan
Chief Operating Officer
Andrew Buchanan joins the Buchanan family group of companies as Chief Operating Officer, representing the fifth generation of family leadership. Based at the Montcalm headquarters, he works closely with teams across the organization to support operational excellence and long-term growth. Previously he was a Senior Analyst on the Statements and Investor Reporting team at Robert W. Baird & Co. in Milwaukee, where he earned the 2024 Tops of Ops Award. He brings a strong focus on efficiency, data-driven decision-making, and continuous improvement. Andrew graduated from the University of St Andrews in Scotland in 2019 with a master's degree in business and Middle Eastern studies.
Jan Smith, CFSP
Executive Vice-President, Funeral Operations
Jan Smith joined the company in 2012 and oversees Flanner Buchanan and Lavenia & Summers funeral operations. With a background as a former COO in Missouri and Managing Partner in Florida funeral firms, she holds licenses as a Funeral Director, Embalmer, and CFSP. Jan holds a BS from Eastern Illinois University, a Mortuary degree from Worsham College, and an MBA from Indiana Wesleyan University. She serves as Secretary of her Church Board and is active in various funeral service organizations.
Ben R. Upton
Executive Vice President, Sales and Marketing
Ben grew up in Hendersonville, TN and attended Tennessee Technological University and Western Kentucky University, majoring in Horticulture and Turfgrass Management. He served in the United States Marine Corps with the 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines, and is a life member of the American Legion and VFW and an Honorary Life Member of the Vietnam Veterans of America. Personal philosophy: making funeral, cremation, or cemetery decisions does not have to be difficult; advance planning lets you express your wishes and relieve loved ones of a future emotional and financial burden, allowing for a true celebration of life.
Jason Graff
VP of Finance
Jason Graff joined the Buchanan Group in March 2026. He holds degrees in Accounting and Finance from Indiana University Bloomington and is a licensed CPA in Indiana. He has extensive experience in for-profit and non-profit accounting, spending his first 20 years with two large CPA firms specializing in auditing small to medium-sized businesses and navigating complex reporting requirements, followed by several years in corporate finance. He is passionate about financial reporting accuracy and robust internal controls.
Mark McCrocklin
Vice President of Operations, Buchanan Group / Flanner Buchanan
Mark has extensive experience problem-solving for funeral homes, cemeteries, and special-event facilities. Over a near 40-year career he has gone from seasonal grounds worker to corporate vice president, serving as sales advisor and manager, cemetery grounds supervisor, location manager, combination manager, and now facilities manager responsible for multiple locations across nearly 1,000 acres. He served as an instructor on event planning at ICCFA University and is a past president and current board member of the Indiana Cemetery Association.
Nicole Schoville
VP of Human Resources
Nicole is the Buchanan Group's Vice President of Human Resources, driving strategic initiatives in talent management, employee relations, benefits administration, and legal compliance. Originally from Texas, she earned her degree in Psychology from the University of Texas, Dallas and continued her studies in Alternative Dispute Resolution. Her career began with two years teaching English in Prague before she settled in Indianapolis, where she is active in the local HR community.
Lesley Deaton
VP of Administration
Lesley Deaton joined the company in 2013 and serves as Vice President of Administration, overseeing Human Resources, Payroll, Benefits, and Risk Management. She is certified in Human Resources Management. Lesley spent three years serving with AmeriCorps in Philadelphia and is an active volunteer with Shepherd Community Center and various school organizations.
Rebecca Adair
Guest Relations Manager
Rebecca Adair joined the company in 2019 and serves as Guest Relations Manager. A former police officer, she chose the funeral profession as a second career and believes building relationships with families is the foundation of Flanner Buchanan.
Buddy Shea
Family Service Manager
Buddy grew up in Nashville, Tennessee and is a graduate of John A. Gupton College. For the last decade he has served families as a licensed funeral director, embalmer, crematory operator, and family service advisor. Before mortuary school he was in priestly formation as a seminarian and later a religious brother. Buddy believes every family should have a concrete plan in place to remove the stress and anxiety that otherwise surround a loss, and he encourages everyone to have the conversation.
Karen Becvar
Marketing Coordinator
Karen grew up in Illinois and moved to Indiana in 1994 after studying architecture at the College of DuPage. She joined the company in 1999 and provides administrative and marketing support to the leadership team, drawing on more than 20 years in customer service and retail management.
